Lot description:

Netherlands East Indies
Pulu Penang (Prince of Wales Island). East India Company 1/4 Dollar 1788 AU Details (Environmental Damage) NGC, KM6.2, Scholten-968 (RR). The first of this type we have encountered and the only example certified by either NGC or PCGS, showcasing calligraphy in a finely thin, elegant, and seemingly refined style with an argent and olive-tinged tone over the surfaces. Certainly a condition rarity, the source for the environmental damage noted on the holder unclear.
