The Dilemma of Mintage

A long queue for Malaysia Commemorative Coin in 2012

About ten years ago, Malaysia Commemorative Coin collection was a very cold collection theme, in order to cut the losses of coin issuance, you may find that Central of Malaysia was keep reducing the mintage volume. The whole dynamic of market trend was gradually improved in 2009, especially after the series of promotion and sharing in social media which has triggered the fever of commemorative coin collection especially in 2012 that almost 80% of collectors, stockists or re-sellers failed get single piece on sale although they had queue up in central bank since the midnight. Can you imagine how horrible the fever was?

Later, those persons who managed to get a piece of it surely won't give up the chance to show off their grabs, happiness and thoughts on social medias. On the other side it triggered the negative emotional of another group of people who failed to grab it. Subsequently, a huge waves of allegation and complaints toward central bank specially you may notice it from social media or bloggers which alleged central bank opened the room for businessmen to claim the huge profit from buy and sell activities or central bank doesn't care the demand of "real collectors" and they had to buy from secondary market with high premium price and etc.

I believed, central bank heard this voice, especially you may find that all the mintage of commemorative coin since 2013 has been marked up significantly up to 300-500% compared to previous issuance.

Eventually, what happened on ground ? Those "real collectors" are disappeared eventually and you may find them became ignorance in this hobby anymore, the crowd of people competing each other on the sale day disappeared immediately.

What is the lesson of this occasion?

A lot of people don't understand the simple theorem of collection that the fun of collection is driven by the sense of "you feel hard and difficult to obtain it, no matter financially or stock availability". If this principle is no longer standing, it becomes a condition that I have it, you have it, he has it, she has it and everyone has it, it is pretty sure the enthusiasm will get subsided. End up the whole ecosystem was destroyed and everyone lost interests in this game finally.

How many people aware that the fun of collection is a process to grab, not the item.
