Strangest numismatic errors - strike on a piece of nail!

Lot 3496 in upcoming January 2016 Heritage Auction in Tampa is one of the strangest numismatic errors that we - or for that matter any other numismatist - has ever seen. PCGS's label describes it as a No Date Mint Error dime, MS65, struck on a nail. It is immediately obvious when looking at it that it the striking dies were for a Roosevelt Dime, but many questions remain:

  1. How did the nail get into the Mint Machinery?
  2. Since a dime was struck on it, was it a 10 penny nail? (No, according to the description it was a 6 penny nail. Apparently the US Mint did not strike sixpence coins at the time.)
  3. Is MS65 a sharpness grade?
  4. Which side was hit by the hammer die?
  5. Is this piece tooled?
  6. Would it be cleaned with nail polish?
  7. Is this considered hammered coinage?
  8. What will the nail price be?
  9. What will the hammer price be?

NGC Buying Back Labels to Increase Census Accuracy

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation is buying back its NGC certifications labels, the company announced Monday, July 2.

These labels show a coin’s description, its grade and a unique certification number. They also indicate a coin’s placement in the NGC Census population report, and this is the reason for the buyback program.

Collectors and dealers sometimes remove coins from NGC holders, making the NGC Census less accurate when their associated certification records are not deleted.

"In an effort to provide the most accurate data to NGC Census users, NGC will now offer a 50 cent grading credit for each NGC certification label that is returned to NGC for removal from its population database," the company said. "This offer, which is effective immediately, is valid for all US, world and ancient coins."

Most of the more than 31 million coins graded by NGC appear in the Census, according to the company, which is available for free at NGCCoin.com.

March Salzberg, NGC Chairman, said the NGC Census is "one of the most significant tools" they offer and the label buyback program is a part of their "commitment to provide the best, most informative resources to collectors and dealers."

All NGC Collectors Society paid members and NGC Authorized Dealers are eligible to take part in the buyback program. NGC said a 50-cent credit will be issued to member accounts for each label returned. To participate, the labels and a member’s account number must be sent to NGC in an envelope marked "

What is Damaged Grade?

DAMAGED is a catchall term used when the coin displays any form of destructive contact that may not be defined more precisely. This may be narrowed down a bit by specifying OBV DAMAGE, REV DAMAGE, RIM DAMAGE or EDGE DAMAGE. In general, the damaged coin is fallen as "Details Grade".

The photo below illustrates one of the sample of OBV Damage by NGC.
