What is boiling frog effect?

In nineteenth century, Cornell University has conducted a famous experiment known as "frog test." The experiment tried put a frog into a pot of boiling water, the frog was shocked and jumped out immediately from the pot. The frog was safe at the end. Later, the second experiment was put it in a pot of cold water and let the frog swims freely, but another site heated the cold water slowly. Although the frog can feel the outside temperature is changing, because of its inertia caused it not to jump out immediately. Until the juncture when the heat was unbearable, it was too late to save itself.

This is famous philosophy known "boiling frog effect".

What is mintage?

According to James Bucki (coin expert), mintage is the quantity of a particular coin that the mint produced. However, the parameter used to measure “mintage” in Malaysia commemorative collection is unique compared to conventional numismatic bibliography. The mintage terminology used in Malaysia is pointing to the number of packaging varieties but not the quantity of a particular coin minted. It is highly distorted and not reflects the real landscape and scarcity of the coin.

Sarawak 1906H 20 cents NGC MS65 sold at USD 2,820

Charles J. Brooke 20 Cents 1906-H MS65 NGC, Heaton mint, KM10, Pr-5. A conditionally rare coin in the Sarawak series, and thusly of great importance for the collector, with surfaces that are not only absent distracting flaws, but that also retain memorizing qualities. Largely toned, green and gold saturations are most prevalent, their placement blanketing the obverse, with russet-tinged red colors intensifying at the edges. Full underlying luster helps to assure the Gem grade. A great coin - not surprisingly the finest NGC has certified by a large margin.

A set of Malaysia 1971 Tunku Abdul Rahman G100R under NGC secure, PF68UC has been sold via eBay. A stiff competition of 36 bids was found, and the item was hammered at USD 7,100 in 11th Jun 2014.

This set is one of rarest gold coins in Malaysia commemorative list, the coin was issued in 1971, the piece which is still well preserved in nowadays was extremely difficult to obtain, most of them has been melted due to less popular in past tens of  years or a partial of them are not under proper keeping.

Another new record in eBay, a set of Malaysia Proof Set of 6 has been sold for RM 9,689 (in approx.) in 27th May 2015. A stiff competition of 51 bids was recorded. The whole set of coin was believed with significantly PVC contamination. It is not surprisingly indeed as most of the similar 1967 Proof Sets do facing the same problem due to the plastic capsules used in the 1960s were contained the PVC which is not friendly for collections.

What is PVC contamination?

One of the most common and destructive residues encountered on a coin is the plasticizer PVC. The chemical, PVC, makes plastic softer and more pliable and is frequently added to the make up of popular coin holders such as flips. The PVC will come out of the plastic and collect on the surface of the coin inside the PVC-laden holder. If this residue is allowed to sit on the surface and fester long enough, it will eat into the surface of the coin resulting in a certain type of environmental damage known as PVC etching. Even for new coins, PVC residue can be bad news. (NCS)

Sarawak 1910-H 20 cents PCGS AU55

Year; 1910
Mintage: 25,000
Weight: 5.43g
Diameter: 23.3mm
Edge: Milled

Numismatic Views:

Sarawak silver coin which is one of extremely difficult to find a presentable condition nowadays. This coin was still retained most of the sharp details and luster, minimal deep hairlines were observed in general. The population statistic was generated in Dec 2014, the figures may be different compared to latest.

Finding nice examples of the coinage of Rajah Charles Johnson Brooke is difficult due to the export restrictions on Sarawak coinage, limited mintage for the population size and that most coins circulated. The coins are always in strong demand by collectors. The silver coins are scarcer than the copper issues due to a mintage under 200,000 per issue for the series and a low survival rate as a result of the melting of almost all of the Sarawak silver obtained by Japanese during their World War II occupation. Malaysia, Bank Negara, 2 Ringgit KNB46A-B ND (1996-99), Mismatched Serial Number Error in PMG 66

If you are sensitive on my collection, I only have a very small collection of paper money compared to coinage collection especially in modern paper money. Perhaps, I do not have strong chemical reaction with paper money. However, it may subjected to some exceptions sometimes, I like the ancient collection which contained its own specified stories, such as Malaya Japanese over-printed notes, Malaya notes from sinking ship, Malaya Rubber Coupons, and etc. Unfortunately, their current market value are always beyond my affordability.

Reversely, I would like introduce a piece of Malaysia modern error notes, Malaysia 8th Series RM2, Serial Number Mismatched, PMG 66. In fact, I am not the fans of error notes collection, I didn’t purposely to search this item until I saw a person would like to let it go in 2009. Basically, it was just driven by my tend-to-own demand by its fanciness. I had also remembered, the seller just put paper note casually into a POS express envelope, it was without no any hard card to pad it, and especially my mail box was seepage! It was extremely lucky, I found it early in time! Just after an hour I collected it, raining was started…

I used to have some discussion with several senior collectors pertaining to the Malaysia number mismatched errors, such errors found in the local collection are not too many but also not rare, at present the most common number mismatched errors found are:

1. Malaysia 4th Series $5
2. Malaysia 3rd Series $1
3. Malaysia 11th Series RM5
4. Malaysia 12th Series RM5
5. Malaysia 11th Series RM10
6. Malaysia 12th Series RM1

I did concerned the other identical RM2 number mismatched errors in this few years, it was still to no avail. Along with logical sense, if you find a piece of number mismatched error, it should be not only in one piece but reversely a small pile of it which more than four or five pieces at least. Therefore, this post is not only beyond the sharing, but also used to search the lineages of my loving collection. If you have a similar piece, please share with me!

Have a nice weekend!

Do "collection" and "investment" linked?

Second-generation collector Chong Zhou, 25, compares his method of collecting with that of his parents, who run a large pharmaceutical company. “They bought on instinct,” he says, “and later, when the market took off, on investment.”

Did you recently discovered there is another voice in collection circle regarding to call on everyone make a look back to the beginning enthusiasm in collection? The slogan sounds like a pair of old couple commemorate their old loving story which was always nourished with the passion and pleasure. That must be sweet memories of everyone, I remember my first came into contact with collections, although I just bought an ordinary coin, it may spend my few days just to admire it, and you won’t feel tired to explore the origin of the currency, the story behind the coin and the collectors’ reviews. You may have a long story to tell off if you saw anyone who have the similar enthusiasm with you.  Few days ago, I talked about the same matter with my companion, she replied me with an unwelcomely tone that: hello, you have no any changes of your craziness, don't talk with a tone sound like you have changed a lot!! Haha, I believe there should be a large number of collectors should also have the same experience as me, are you still hold that origin passion?

It is a very encouraging campaign to ask a review on the original passion in collection. However, if you would like to further elaborate this topic to "purely-for-collection", perhaps we may need more exploration about it. What is "purely-for-collection", simple to say it is regardless of the cost to acquire a collection, no value appreciation concerns or it is merely driven by your demand-to-own it. Basically, this topic is highly debatable if you are seriously involved to argue it, it always ended up without any valid conclusions. So, if you stick to the "right" or "wrong" standing in this topic, it is probably never get to the right answer.

Personally, I tend to elaborate this issue in human terms. If you advocate on the purely-in-collection principle, how to handle the dilemma such as  you  bought a collection about 10 years ago, you just spent hundreds of dollars in that time, it is valued about tens of thousands nowadays. Would you transfer the possession without concern the market value to the next owners who may similarly advocate the pure-in-collection? If true, your extraordinarily cultivation is always our deeply admiration. Perhaps you will have the opportunity to meet similar people few decades ago, in that time the capital gain of collection was not as good as today, and most people were still struggling for their life spends. Some of the aged and senior collectors notified the next generations has no interest to inherit their collections, it was not surprising they may choose to make a cheap transfer to you. However, in the materialistic society as today, if you still given chance to meet such person, it may more difficult than you are striking a jackpot. Sometimes, we can easily find many people who advocate the purely-in-collection spirit, however when he has a something good ,it maybe another matter, so in other words his purely-in-collection spirit is "selective" indeed, which only probably confined in the zone of low-tier collection.

"Collection of investment" is a pleasure hobby, you do not require to make it complicated. What we may need to pay attention to is "collection of speculation". Sometimes, we earn some extra money in collections transfer does not necessarily represent we are depriving it as our life cost. The most joyful moment is the feeling of your vision was affirmed and rewarded. I believe most of the collectors agree to it.

I do not intend to write on this subject with a conclusion, why not we take our predecessor, Mr Wan Thiam Teik’s quote as a reference?

"That is another way to contemplate this debates. In the time when prices are modest, that is no issue at all to collect for pure pleasure, this was a common perception only a decade ago. However, came to the time as today, price of collections are mostly escalated significantly, it is no longer easy to collect as pure hobby. Why? The cost for hobby is not modest anymore. While we contemplate to spend tens of thousands or higher for quality materials, why not we take this money to improve the quality of our life, do something for the family such as home decoration, or have a trip for family vacation, or buy a better car, or repay part of the mortgage, and so on. It is absolutely no wise to use our saving on hobby without any appraisal of the investment potential. Whether we like it or not, collector mindset is bound to change, the perception of solely for the interest has slowly become a history. Today we're at the genesis of a new way of looking at these collectible banknotes and coins — from an investment perspective instead of a collecting perspective. "

Have a nice reading!
