According to James Bucki (coin expert), mintage is the quantity of a particular coin that the mint produced. However, the parameter used to measure “mintage” in Malaysia commemorative collection is unique compared to conventional numismatic bibliography. The mintage terminology used in Malaysia is pointing to the number of packaging varieties but not the quantity of a particular coin minted. It is highly distorted and not reflects the real landscape and scarcity of the coin.

Refer to the table as above, mintage of silver coin was 700 pieces, nordic gold (proof) coin was 350 pieces and gold coin was 250 pieces. Although, we may often heard some parties promote the set of 2 was only with mintage in 200 sets, but you have to aware the meaning is stand for the number of packaging but not the mintage although our market still insists the latter is correct. Thus, as a collector, you should clear about your collection standing, it is either you are collecting the whole packaging or solely the coin itself. If you are collecting the whole packaging which is beyond the parameter of numismatic collection. However, if you insists that you are coin collector, mintage is always the ultimate measurement to par the value of your collection but not the packaging varieties. Thus, kindly ensure you are aware with it and not being fooled by market norm.
Have a nice reading.
