Strangest numismatic errors - strike on a piece of nail!

Lot 3496 in upcoming January 2016 Heritage Auction in Tampa is one of the strangest numismatic errors that we - or for that matter any other numismatist - has ever seen. PCGS's label describes it as a No Date Mint Error dime, MS65, struck on a nail. It is immediately obvious when looking at it that it the striking dies were for a Roosevelt Dime, but many questions remain:

  1. How did the nail get into the Mint Machinery?
  2. Since a dime was struck on it, was it a 10 penny nail? (No, according to the description it was a 6 penny nail. Apparently the US Mint did not strike sixpence coins at the time.)
  3. Is MS65 a sharpness grade?
  4. Which side was hit by the hammer die?
  5. Is this piece tooled?
  6. Would it be cleaned with nail polish?
  7. Is this considered hammered coinage?
  8. What will the nail price be?
  9. What will the hammer price be?

NGC Buying Back Labels to Increase Census Accuracy

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation is buying back its NGC certifications labels, the company announced Monday, July 2.

These labels show a coin’s description, its grade and a unique certification number. They also indicate a coin’s placement in the NGC Census population report, and this is the reason for the buyback program.

Collectors and dealers sometimes remove coins from NGC holders, making the NGC Census less accurate when their associated certification records are not deleted.

"In an effort to provide the most accurate data to NGC Census users, NGC will now offer a 50 cent grading credit for each NGC certification label that is returned to NGC for removal from its population database," the company said. "This offer, which is effective immediately, is valid for all US, world and ancient coins."

Most of the more than 31 million coins graded by NGC appear in the Census, according to the company, which is available for free at NGCCoin.com.

March Salzberg, NGC Chairman, said the NGC Census is "one of the most significant tools" they offer and the label buyback program is a part of their "commitment to provide the best, most informative resources to collectors and dealers."

All NGC Collectors Society paid members and NGC Authorized Dealers are eligible to take part in the buyback program. NGC said a 50-cent credit will be issued to member accounts for each label returned. To participate, the labels and a member’s account number must be sent to NGC in an envelope marked "

What is Damaged Grade?

DAMAGED is a catchall term used when the coin displays any form of destructive contact that may not be defined more precisely. This may be narrowed down a bit by specifying OBV DAMAGE, REV DAMAGE, RIM DAMAGE or EDGE DAMAGE. In general, the damaged coin is fallen as "Details Grade".

The photo below illustrates one of the sample of OBV Damage by NGC.

Why some Sarawak coinages are so precious?

World Coins: The Coinage of the White Rajahs of Sarawak: Part 2 Rajah Charles Brooke

Posted by Jay Turner, NGC Grader on 11/14/2011

The coinage of Rajah Charles Johnson Brooke continued the tradition of Rajah James Brooke.

Before James Brooke died in 1868, he set a precedent for the future rulers and coinage of Sarawak. Unmarried and without legitimate children, Brooke looked to his extended family for heirs. Thus Sarawak’s government and coinage remained in control of the Brooke family as the “White Rajahs” continued their reign.

The succession of Sarawak was set in place in 1861 when Rajah James Brooke named Captain John Brooke, his sister’s oldest son, his successor. However, after John Brooke criticized James Brooke, the latter rescinded this order and banished John Brooke from Sarawak. His new successor, Charles Anthoni Johnson Brooke, another son of his sister Emma Frances Johnson, eventually succeeded James Brooke and become Rajah Charles Brooke of Sarawak, the Second White Rajah.

Sarawak 1915H 20 cents

A piece of Sarawak 20 cents secured by PCGS in AU55 has sold for USD 1300 +18% (RM4.35/USD) by Stacks Bowers and Ponterio in August 2015. This coin is of the Sarawak scarce coin series in which the mintage was only 25,000 pieces. A piece in numerical grade or good in condition is definitely hard to grab from numismatics market, it may due to the moist climate, poor in economics, and a huge number of silver coinages were snatched by Japanese Military as warfare in 1940s.  According to the PCGS and NGC population in 08/10/2015, it was only about 7-8 pieces which scored a numerical grade until today (with the assumption there is no cross-over grading among the grading companies, if true, the number will be even lesser).

United States 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar secured by PCGS in MS66+

A 1794 silver dollar sold for $4,993,750 including the 17.5 percent buyer’s fee in 30 Sept 2015, New York City in the sale of the D. Brent Pogue Collection conducted jointly by Stack’s Bowers Galleries and Sotheby’s.

This PCGS MS-66+ 1794 Flowing Hair dollar brought in $4,993,750 in a joint Stack’s Bower and Sotheby’s auction on Sept. 30.
The second auction of masterpieces of United States coins from the D. Brent Pogue Collection by Stack’s Bowers Galleries in conjunction with Sotheby’s took place in New York City on Sept. 30.
The star of the auction was the Lord St. Oswald 1794 Flowing Hair silver dollar that opened at $2.6 million and then moved up in standard bidding increments before selling for a final bid of $4,250,000. With the 17.5 percent buyer’s fee added, the price came to $4,993,750, at the high end of the presale estimate of $3 million to $5 million.
However, in this auction of just 105 lots called by Sotheby’s auctioneer David Redden, the difference between the winning price realized and $5 million couldn’t have purchased a single coin in the sale, as all coins sold for five-figure prices. The second Pogue sale was narrowly focused on early Capped Bust silver half dollars, Flowing Hair silver dollars and early gold $2.50 quarter eagles, $5 half eagles and $10 eagles.
The prized dollar was offered midway through the sale as lot 2041 and was graded Mint State 66+ by Professional Coin Grading Service. Beyond the quality of the coin itself, the provenance was noteworthy in that it had a complete ownership history that could be traced back to 1794. The provenance listing includes a who’s who of numismatists active in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries and while the legendary dollar traded often in the 1960s through 1980s, its last appearance at auction was when it was offered at the Stack’s sale of the Jimmy Hayes Collection in October 1985. Pogue then purchased it via David Akers.
It is an important coin that was the focus of mainstream news attention on the auction, including stories in the New York Timesand hundreds of other media outlets. As the description noted, “This elegant coin, whose simplicity cloaks its world-wide historical relevance, is much more than a numismatic treasure. It is among the first examples of a currency that would become the most dominant the world has ever seen.”
For a sense of the depth of the offering, the sale included six 1795 Flowing Hair dollars that sold between $822,500 and $258,500.
The bidder who purchased the 1794 dollar also purchased another spectacular coin two lots later: a 1795 Flowing Hair dollar with a silver plug, also carrying a Lord St. Oswald provenance, grading MS-65+ by PCGS and selling for $705,000.
Stay tuned for more coverage of this important auction in the Oct. 19, 2015, issue of Coin World.

What is Carbon Spot?

The Effect of Carbon Spots on Copper-Nickel Coins

The term "carbon spots" refers to tiny black concentrations of corrosion. Oftentimes these are so small as to escape notice by the naked eye, though they may be seen with low-power magnification. Also called "flyspecks" by some in the hobby, these spots are actually slightly raised from the surface of the coin, as the corrosion forms around some particle of organic matter, such as paper dust (often present with coin albums and cardboard "2x2" stapled holders) or human saliva deposited unknowingly by a numismatist during casual handling. Oxygen, humidity, and other atmospheric elements react with the debris to form a minute mound of corrosion around it, and this is called a carbon spot.

Very Rare Tientsin Tutung Yamen 1902 Gold Medal
CHINA. Tientsin Tutung Yamen Gold Medal, 1902. PCGS Genuine--Damage, AU Details Secure Holder.

49.71 mm. L&M-1108; Li-pg. 90 (plate medal). By J. Chevt and struck by TENSHODO. VERY RARE gold medal struck by the seven member provisional military government which controlled Tientsin ca. 1900-02. The obverse records this provisional government with a legend in French around enamel flags of Germany, United States, France, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan and Russia with the dates of its existence below; Reverse: Two line inscription within wreath of oak and laurel. Having been seized by the Boxers in June of 1900 Tientsin was recaptured by forces of the Eight Nation Alliance (the seven countries listed above as well as Austria-Hungary) on July 14th with the provisional government being formed shortly thereafter on July 30th. For the next two-years this provisional government oversaw military control of Tientsin and its surrounding areas. Beginning in late Spring of 1902 meetings with Governor Yuan Shih-kai of Chihli started the process of returning control of the city back to the Qing government with Tientsin Tutung Yamen ceasing existence on August 15th. While it was struck in both silver and gold it is believed that the gold versions were only presented to the foreign dignitaries of the provisional government. It is speculated that only two of these gold medals are known today, however neither this example nor a different piece recently brought to auction match the specimen plated in L&M which may indicate a third example. Regardless of the surviving number this medal is of massive historical importance, clearly representing an international effort to stabilize the rapidly deteriorating control of the Qing dynasty. Though given a details grade by PCGS due to a moderate rim bump and resulting abrasion on the reverse at 12 o'clock the medal is a handsome example, gracefully showing its age with lovely orange toning around the devices and fully intact enamel on the seven nation flags.
Estimate: $25,000.00 - $35,000.00
PCGS Genuine--Damage, AU Details Secure Holder.

Coin News:Divers recover $4.5M in gold coin off Florida beach

COINS820.jpg

A team of treasure hunters scouring the waters off Florida last month recovered a $4.5 million bounty of gold coins – including several made for the king of Spain, Philip V, in the early 1700s, Florida Today reported.

The find – made July 30 and 31 off the coast of Vero Beach -- was announced Wednesday by Bret Brisben, captain of the S/V Capitana. Brisben and his crew reportedly found 350 gold coins, nine of which are known as Royals and valued at $300,000 apiece.

The discovery, which comes from the 1715 Fleet shipwreck, was made on the 300th anniversary of the July 30, 1715 tragedy -- when the entire fleet of 11 ships traveling from Havana to Spain was lost at sea after it ran afoul of a hurricane. More than 1,000 people died.

"People love treasure stories. It resonates with everybody -- every demographic, young and old, rich and poor," Brisben told the newspaper. "People freak out that we're literally 10-15 feet off the beach in 2-3 feet of water."

The recovered treasure will be shared by Brisben, co-captain Jonah Martinez, diver William Bartlett and Dan Beckingham. Brisben owns Queens Jewels, a historic shipwreck salvage operation that has exclusive rights to the 1715 Treasure Fleet.

The State of Florida can receive 20 percent of the recovered artifacts for purposes of displaying in its museum in Tallahassee, according to a press release.

Brisben’s find comes a month after one of his subcontractors, Eric Schmitt, found 52 gold coins worth more than $1 million. Schmitt found the gold while diving about 150 feet off the coast of Fort Pierce in Florida during his yearly treasure-hunting trip with his wife, his sister and his parents, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

What Are “Wheel Marks”?

Posted by Paul Sandler, NGC Grader on 1/20/2015

Wheel marks are most often seen on 20th-century silver and are easily missed by the inexperienced eye.

Wheel marks are a concentrated area of hairlines that are caused by the rubber wheels in coin counting machines. When there is insufficient spacing between them, the wheels can essentially polish a small portion of the surface of the coin. These wheel marks are most often seen on 20th century silver such as Mercury and Roosevelt dimes as well as silver Washington quarters since these are the types of coins that you would most expect to be run through counting machines by dealers.

While they are easily spotted by an experienced coin grader, they can be quite difficult for those who don’t know what they are looking for to see. Below are some examples of wheel marks on Washington quarters.

Photographed in normal lighting, this 1954 Washington Quarter looks
completely normal aside from the small die break on the eagle’s wing.

We need help from global numismatic collectors!!

Important Message for all Numismatists

A new amendment to the German Cultural property and Heritage Protection Law looks set to have extremely negative repercussions for collectors worldwide.

The proposed changes to the law, put forward by German Minister of Culture Monika Grütters, will affect anyone specialising in traditional collecting fields, such as coins, stamps and books.

What does this mean?

In basic terms, it means that any owner of what is deemed 'cultural goods' with a value of 2,500 Euros will now have to provide absolute proof of the the item's provenance for the previous 20 years.
In the case of items that are deemed 'of archaeological value', the same is true to the value of just 100 Euros.

I don't trade in Germany, why should I care?

Collectors all over the world need to take notice of this proposal. If it passes, it means that it will severely restrict trade in Germany, which will inevitably have a detrimental effect on prices and values across the entire market.

Law is law, what can I do?

This is one of those rare occasions where the voice of those directly affected can make a difference. The proposed amendment openly calls for 'comment and contribution', meaning that it is not yet set in stone and we can have an influence on the amendment's future.

So, what do we do?

A petition has been created which you can sign by following this link.
At A H Baldwin & Sons we are actively encouraging our valued customers and friends to sign, so that we can continue to preserve the traditions and time-honoured culture of not just numismatics but collecting in all its guises.

As always, we continue to appreciate your support.
